INTRODUCTION

Ready, Set, Go

The Raid Pyrenean is a ‘must-do’ ride for any road cycling enthusiast.  In the 1950’s the Cyclo Club Béarnais were looking for a challenge, so they created a route across the Pyrenees, keeping as close to the Spanish border as possible (on surfaced roads!). The sting in the tail was the 100 hours given to participants to complete the traverse.

It is a chance to ride most of the famous cols in the Pyrenees, including beasts such as the Tourmalet and Aubisque and to cycle along the quiet and beautiful back roads and passes of France’s southernmost mountain range.  The scenery is stunning, the road surfaces good and the car drivers are generally extremely courteous and respectful of cyclists.

For a decade now we have been supporting cyclists in achieving their goals.  We are passionate about our product being the best it can be and we help over 200 cyclists a year do the official Raid Pyrenean route. The expertise and experience of our team really shows; we provide two highly customised support vans per group, our guides are attentive and energetic and we know that this is not just a cycling challenge – it is also a holiday, so we keep it fun!  It is also about your goals and aspirations and we pride ourselves on our individual customer focus from your first enquiry to the last moment of your holiday.

DAY 01 - HENDAYE TO OLORON ST MARIE

Enjoy Pure Fun

"A good warm-up day to get the legs acclimatised ahead of the much bigger mountain challenges of the next three days."

Col D’ Osquich - Average grade: 2.9 %, Length: 12 km, Altitude start: 160 m, Altitude top: 507 m, Ascent: 347 m

Col De Pinodieta - Average grade: 1.9 %, Length: 5.6 km, Altitude start: 70 m, Altitude top: 176 m, Ascent: 106 m

Col de Saint-Ignace - Average grade: 4.6 %, Length: 3.32 km, Altitude start: 23 m, Altitude top: 177 m, Ascent: 154, Maximum: 13 %

Dip your toes in the Atlantic to make this a true coast to coast adventure, before the grand depart at 09.00.  On quiet roads, pass through the Basque heartland with distinctive burgundy and white buildings, bullrings and pelot courts. You undulate your way over the Col De St Ignace (169m) and the Col De Pinodieta (176m) before lunch, probably in the walled town of St Jean Pied de Port.

The first proper climb of the route is the Col D’ Osquich (500m), followed by small climbs and lovely villages to Oloron St Marie, where the hotel is.

DAY 02 - OLORON ST MARIE TO ARREAU

"The Big One"

"Very much in the category of 'One of the Rides of Your Life'. With close to 5000m of elevation to overcome and three of the most iconic cols in the world - Aubisque, Tourmalet & Aspin - there is "nowhere to hide" today."

Col D’Aubisque - Average grade: 6.5 %, Length: 12 km, Altitude start: 710 m, Altitude top: 1489 m, Ascent: 779 m, Maximum: 10 %

Col de Soulor - Average grade: 4.4 %, Length: 2.6 km, Altitude start: 1360 m, Altitude top: 1474 m, Ascent: 114 m

Col De Tourmalet - Average grade: 7.4 %, Length: 19 km,Altitude start: 711 m, Altitude top: 2115 m, Ascent: 1404 m, Maximum: 10.2 %

Col de l'Aspin - Average grade: 6.5 %, Length: 12 km, Altitude start: 710 m, Altitude top: 1489 m, Ascent: 779 m, Maximum: 10 %

Today’s route travels over the most feared cols in the Pyrenees and offers spectacular riding.

Fortunately, there is a gentle warm up to the stunningly beautiful Col D’Aubisque (1709m) where you can pause at the café on the top for a deserved rest before dropping down and back up the Col de Soulor (1464m), which you will honestly hardly notice!

A fabulous swooping descent leads you to Argeles Gazost, well situated as a lunch stop. Here you meet your first busy road taking you up the gorge to Luz-St Sauveur. Needing little introduction, next up is the Col De Tourmalet (2115m) and another great café with some interesting Tour de France artefacts. Then just up the Climb Col de l'Aspin, descending to Arreau which takes you to our resting place for the night.

DAY 03 – ARREAU TO TARASCON-SUR-ARIÈGE

"Some minor respite after the demands of Day 2, but the Peyresourde and Portet d' Aspet in particular still provide some sizeable challenges today."

Col de Pereyresourde - Average grade: 6.1 %, Length: 15.27 km, Altitude start: 630 m, Altitude top: 1569 m, Ascent: 939 m, Maximum: 9 %

Col Des Ares - Average grade: 4.6 %, Length: 6.7 km, Altitude start: 487 m, Altitude top: 797 m, Ascent: 310 m

Col De Buret - Average grade: 3.3 %, Length: 3.41 km, Altitude start: 487 m, Altitude top: 599 m, Ascent: 112 m

Col de Portet D’Aspet - Average grade: 3.1 %, Length: 18.14 km, Altitude start: 512 m, Altitude top: 1069 m, Ascent: 557 m

With possibly the 'toughest' day behind you, climb the picturesque Col d'Aspin (1489m) and the Col de Pereyresourde (1569m) before lunch today, and your efforts will be rewarded by a cafe selling the best (and best value!) crêpes in the Pyrenees. The following descent, right down to Luchon, is voted the best of the Raid Pyrenean. Undulating over the Col Des Ares (797m) and the Col De Buret (602m) is delightful, especially when compared to the 14% inclines of approaching the Col de Portet D’Aspet (1069m).

Day 4 Raid.png

DAY 04- TARSCON-SUR-ARIÈGE TO PRADES

"Beautiful back-roads and some delightful climbs including the Port de Pailhères - the second highest summit on the tour at 2001m."

After a gentle warm up to Senconac, followed by an equally beautiful descent to Caussou, From here you climb up Col de Marmare which carries you over into the plateaus and limestone gorges of the Aude. Then the Big one of the day the Port de Pailhères with an 8.1% avg

Next up is the Col du Jau (1506m) before the final descent which takes us nearly all the way to our hotel. Prades has a reassuringly Mediterranean feel about it, with lots of courtyard cafes and clay tiled roofs.

Day 5 Raid.png

DAY 05 - PRADES TO CERBERE

Don't be fooled into thinking the ride today will be flat just because you are near the coast! You hit the Mediterranean at Argeles-Sur-Mer taking on some some fairly large undulations along the coast road through the fortified town of Collioure, and on to our final destination of Cerbere.

Your 100hrs is up at 13.00 so no dawdling today!

Cerbere is a pretty fishing village with a pebble beach and seafront bars - the perfect place to relax and reflect on the emotional highs and lows of the Raid!

You stay in a charming hotel with strong links to the Pau Cycling Club who first devised the Raid Pyrenean route.
